typical newbie question

Keeping live plants with cichilds is a very difficult taks, espceially with americans. They love to dig, dig, and some more digging. However, they are awesome fish to watch and care for. I have 7 convicts and 2 blue acaras and they don't seriously attack eachother. If you get a 100g, i would just keep the fish you have and add some more american cichlids, maybe some convicts because they won't get beat up by your JD.

Reguarding the pleco, or cleaner fish. Its not always necessary, i suppose if you just like the fish, however it seems you dont' really like how they look. Maybe look into getting a more attractive pleco. There are so many varities to suit everyone's needs. Personally i like the bristle nose, they are beautiful, and don't get massive and they don't have nearly as much waste as most others.

Its not so much the aggression I'm worried about in your 20 gallon (which there may be some if your fish live long enough to mature) but the size issue. Those are some big fish! And no, they dont grow to thier 'tank size'... they grow until they die of cramped conditions.

Really, moving them to the 100 gallon would be your best bet, or, return them to the store and get other fish more suited to your 20 gallon.

I still think Africans are a great choice if you want lots of color and activity, but you are limited to the plants you can keep with them.

Well now you've got me thinking about making it an American tank, even though that's the absolute last thing I wanted. My JD is super calm, I've seen the 2 of them fight maybe 3 times and that was over a year ago, the BP usually just bully's him around and the JD takes it. How long should I expect the average JD & BP to live? I really want a colorful african tank and I definitely do not have room for another 100G tank.
