Well this time it appears to be my apple snail that is having an issue. He hasnt moved for 2 days. I phoned the lfs(I didnt buy him from there, just thought I would ask), and they said this is normal, and just to drop in some food, and he will come out soon. What do you guys think? Any advice? thanx.
Keep an eye on him! Still not sure if the one that died in my tank was the source of all the drama I'm having but....better safe than sorry....Can you transfer him to his own jar and give him an algae pellet?
Totally normal, leave it in the tank. You can check if his shell is closed, if he holds it shut he is fine. If it is a female they will "rest" for a bit before and after laying eggs, one of mine sat almost totally still for weeks after laying a huge egg pack.
(just because you only have one snail they can still lay fertilized eggs because they can store sperm for months)
I had a similar incident, my apple snail dindt move for a couple of days and so i transfered it to a small jar to check to see if it was alive and come to find out it was dead....you can also check and see if it smells...dead snails have a distinct odor which smells really bad, live ones dont smell!....so if you are going to keep it in the big tank just take it out and smell it to see if it stinks.
hold the snail in your hand, try and pull at the "lid" or flap that closes the shell. if you feel no resistance then the snail is more than likely dead. it will pull back into the shell. when i took my snail up out of the water it would shrink further back into the shell. there were a few times that i thought for sure it was dead. sometimes it wouldnt move for a couple days.
you dont want to leave a dead snail in your tank for very long, it'll mess up your water and stink up the tank. ugh.
Get something to hold down some lettus and sink it in the tank, I bet he wakes up really fast, I have one that could eat a head of lettus in week I bet......
Yes they like lettus, spinich leaves to, from the fresh veggie section not the caned of frozen.
