so, i was at petsmart yesterday - i know, im not all that crazy about buying fish from petsmart either, unless its a betta - but the glass catfish caught my eye.

Kryptopterus bicirrhis or minor
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Kryptopterus_minor.php

they have a nice (nice as in they look really healthy) school of about 6 or 7 and im tempted to bring the whole school home. my hesitation: im supposed to be getting my 12 emperor tetras in later today (not switching those guys for the catfish by the way, just to cross that option off the list), and my tank is only a 29 gallon. so the total stocking when all is said and done would be:

12 emperor tetras
6-7 glass catfish
4 black khuli loaches
2 banjo catfish
lots of snails

i do in fact have live plants that can help with filtration, actual filtration is an aqueon quiteflow 30 that i have pretty much jam packed with way more filter media than it came with when i bought it (lots and lots of room for the beneficial bacteria colonies to grow), i even have a spare mature filter pad in my 2 gallon snail tank standing by in case i need it. the tank is "mature", wana say some of that filter media is actually the same filter media iv been using for the past 2 or 3 years - every time i upgraded tanks i just moved the sponges up too. dirftwood iv had for years, ect ect, i can safely say it's mature.

that being said and ya'll now having an idea that im experienced with this and know about cycling and the possible need for extra WC with an overstocked tank and making sure everybody gets fed in ways so they dont get out competed for food ect ect... i think i can pull it off. i think i can make this work, it's liable to take lots of diligence on my part but if so im willing to put that into it. but iv gotten plenty of good advice from ya'll lots of times and id like ya'lls input about this before i dive in.

P.S. food for thought, my main concern is oxygen levels. that filter probably does an excellent job and all the fishes would be fine while it's running... but what about in the event of a power failure? what about in the event of a power fail the power company fails miserably at "bringing me the power" back in a timely manner? that's a serious concern of mine.

Thing about glass cats, they really only do well in a species tank, or with very low-profile tankmates like the banjo catfish. Best to set up another 29 or 30 for them, and keep the tetras separately.

i was just reading some recommendations for and against fish for "beginners" (i know you're not) but they did specifically say to avoid glass catfish as they are very sensitive to bad water conditions etc...of course anything is possible, but why not try to toss together a 2-10g for them specifically, do delicate fish and inverts or something? just a thought. Best of luck to you whatever you do. Also those fish do look pretty fantastic.

Glass cats are very shy.I have a group of 10 in a planted 46 with some Rasboras and the only time I see the Catfish is when I'm trimming plants and flush them out. Not worth overstocking a tank with that's for sure.

Just read about Amano mentioning the Glass Cat. He has them in that 12'er on the Jan. TFH cover. They live below waterfalls in Thailand,so super-swift current full of O2 is required to keep them happy. They love clean moving water so dont put them in a small, slow moving setup. Your gonna want to do lots of water changes or they dont live long. A friend of mine spotted them @LFS the other day and had the same reaction. I had to explain that almost all the fish he saw at the store he would not be able to keep in his 10g. Cool lookin fish though. If only we all had 12' ]v[onster tanks.

hey thanks! i didn't know that about them, helps me visualize what kind of tank setup i can do to somewhat replicate their natural environment - and also your making me wonder why i don't have a subscription to an aquarium magazine like that as much as i love this hobby.

i would love to set up a little 10 gallon tank for sensitive fish and inverts but... im saving money by living at home while im in college and when i first started out with this stuff a few years ago i got multi-tank-syndrome... my parents did not like that lol they like looking at my aquarium cause its pretty and they are really happy that i have this hobby, but they dont want a bunch of tanks everywhere. in fact i made a deal with them to let me get a bigger tank (the 29) in exchange for not being restricted to the little 10 and 5 gallon ones i was using.. and that i would not go nuts with any more tanks. so i set up the 29 and combined all my inhabitants, driftwood, ect into the big tank and now (apart from my 2 gallon cookie jar snail tank) that's all im allowed to set up at the moment. at least im not dealing with a 10 gallon being the biggest tank iv got anymore... that was painful.

hence you now understand some of the reasoning behind my starting this thread lol "whoa is me, but alas, whatever will i do? me thinks i doth need more aquariums" lol ya if i could set up another tank for these guys id go get a... actually if i could do that id already have my own house in which case iv decided one of my dream tanks would be something like a 125, well planted, t5HO dual strip lighting, 10000K and 6700K bulbs, white moon type sand, 10 banjo catfish, 25 emperor tetras, 25 black khuli loaches, 14 glass catfish, and 35 marbled hatchet fish for the top, and some good looking driftwood tastefully placed around the tank. yep, if i could do what i wanted right now, that's what id do. but i cant. patience is a virtue and im thankful to have this 29 gallon :)

back on track: overstocking: yea or nay?

Nay.

Agree X2.
For a school of 6-7 of those cats I would get them a 20gal by themselves, or with another school of something that does not bother them---Hatchets, corys, ect.
