Okay, I just purchased a 55 gallon fishtank on craigslist, just cleaned it up as good as a could, had a butt ton of calcium build up on it. Well the question I have is this, I have 2 29 gallon fishtanks both have under gravel filters, would it help or make any sense at all to put one of those under gravel filters into the 55 gallon even though it would not go the length of the tank?

It can't hurt in any way shape or form...going RUGF?

Reverse Under Gravel Filter..pushing water down the lift tubes with a power head or canister discharge to flush the substrate clean...

I wouldnt tear down another tank just to pull the UGF out of it, but if you have an unused but undersized UGF plate, yes, it will work...just not as effectively as a full sized one.

ditto the suggestion to go RUGF with a powerhead or 2. I use Penguin 660r's on my RUGF tanks.

Any idea of the stocking in the 55?

I am combing the two smaller tanks into the 55 gallon. I have take down one 29 so far all the fish are in my tall 29 right now. I have danios, Gouramis, Mollies, guppies, pictus catfish, ghost shrimp, plecos, a fiddler crab, and tetra, none of them have bother each other since the 3 hours then been in there.

You could trim the second plate to fit and set it in sealant..just depends on your desires.

Just got done setting it up, its got a 29 gallon undergravel filter and a 30-60 aquatech power filter. all fish seem to be well for now. Im thinking of setting up one of the 29s just for the fiddler crab.

hi
Gee ,you've already set it up lol 55 are good candidates for false bottom purge systems be cause they are narrow and allows easy cleaning of the filter plate UG are have fallen into disfavor of late but there are many ways to tweek and lengthen the performance very easily Rf are superior to the usual vacuum types but it's very easy to add a cleanup when they silt up. Oh well good luck you probably won't have trouble with that setup at least for a couple of years. gary
