Yeah, you're right - a broken filter probably would not kill the fish in one day. However some of the new canisters are so quiet you almost have to look to see if they are running. I know mine is running by the pattern of the current that the fish food takes in the tank and by watching the output tube specifically. BUT, in a highly stocked tank you could run into ammonia problems pretty quickly. Just saying - better safe than sorry, blah blah blah...

Yeah...aren't those canisters wonderful silent little machines?
But yes, another thing to include here is that when a canister stops running, the conditions inside of it can turn anaerobic....then you end up with ammonia and a bacterial bloom the likes of which no rotten egg has ever seen! :sick:
