essex, great britain
i dont use an ugf at present but i am buying a larger tank (180 ltrs) nxt month. i shall be using an external filter. my questions are:
1, are ugf,s any good?
2, should i use one with an external filter?
3, could i connect it to the ext filt or would i need an extra filter?
4' i use a syphon gravel cleaner, could/should i still use this with an ugf?
many thanks in advance.

Do a search for RGUF or reverse UGF. It is a much better idea. They are great filter systems and combining 2 filters is never a bad idea. The reverse system pushes air through the pltes and up rather than sucking debris down. This means the other filter can easily trap the debris rather than having it accumulate under the plates. Using a gravel vacuum is still a good idea though.

I have a runniong tank with ugf and a gank with rfug.

if using powerheads the ugf is an effective filter..regular use of the vac will help keep detrius matter down.

on the frug..the power head intake is outside and sucks water from the tank into the uplift tube(now a downdraft tube)
the powerhead has a prefilter attached and prefilters water before pushing it into the ugf.

run an external filter in addition ..the ufg/rfug's are excellent bacterial filters. the power filter adds the mechanical part .

this combination is very good.

the drawback was stated that they are not good for planted tanks.

the rfug seems to be doing well as a planted tank for me. the ugf is mediocre

Water, air they are all the same.

Oh and planted tanks work fine with URGF's and RUGF's. RTR's tanks are planted and have been for a long time.

Bah, water is just 2 kinds of air put together. How hard could breathing it be. I will go and check.

Why am I not surprised that you're not back yet???
