Yes, but you'll be losing much of the mechanical filtration of the HOB. Very little of the 'guck' will be pulled up the riser tube into the filter box. You'd be better off getting reverse flow power heads to use. That way the solid wastes will remain in the water column and can be sucked up by the HOB and removed via mechanical filtration easily. This also leaves your substrate much cleaner.
