Malaysian Trumpets Snails, the only freshwater snail that has a cone/spiral shaped shell, do not eat plants, but do eat dead plant matter and detritus. They spend most of their time under the gravel and come out mostly during night. They are live-bearing snails and can reproduce quite rapidly, but if you feed your tank properly this shouldn't be an issue. http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Melanoides_tuberculata.php
If I would of removed mine, the gravel would be so boring.....now it actually moves and is much more entertaining....
I say keep them, They will keep your gravel looking fresh.
Okay, so loaches eat snails, but got no loaches, and I'm a bit overstocked as it is.
Thanks for your replys, got something from each of them! Great list, very helpful.
I guess for the time being, I'll leave the snails alone, and feed more conservitavely.
Every time the gourami comes up on one on the gravel (I have seen only two so far) he looks at it for a moment, then always turns away in disinterest. He's got the attention span of a, well..., a tropical fish.
My population was fine until vacation (2 weeks). The person looking after my place let us come back to a house full of mud-and-plant filled glasses, a dead hermit, a dead gecko, 40+ dead guppy fry, and 1 (they said 1/3 had died...) guppy, a half-dead female balloon mollie, and all my gouramis were almost having dropsy.
I also came back to a literal pile of ramshorns. No joke. And they wern't the ones I was having trouble with!! But suddenly there's 200+! Most are in other tanks now, but I think I'll get me a herd of dwarf chain loaches if I can find a place that has them. They only get 2" long, botia. Btw, if you wanted to cut down on maintenance, you should take out the red-eyes.
^ i kinda had the same problem... left for 3 weeks (and mistakenly asked a friend to feed for me) came back to a billion little snails.
i could get loaches or a botia or something, but the real problem is the empty shells.. the gravel is just littered with them... but they're so tiny i couldn't possibly get them all. *sigh*
but what botia only gets 2" long? i thought they all got at least twice that size.
