Dear Fish Friends;

Today I upgraded the filtration on my
20 gal. from an emperor 280 to a filstar
XP1. I am currently running both filters
until the bio-filter in the XP1 gets started.
I'm just wondering how long should I
keep the old filter running? My guess is
3-4 weeks. Does that sound right?

Also for all you XP1 owners out there,
just wondering how long on the average
you go between filter cleanings?

Thanks;

P.S.
Hope everyone had a good holiday season and happy new year to all....

If I were you I would just leave the emperor 280 on there, its plenty enough. IMO its better than a canister because of the bio-wheel.

Hi Gill,

Welcome to Aquaria Central, home of the filter-opiniated aquarium keepers on the Internet :)

Why did you feel the need to switch? I'm doing something similar myself because my old reliable W/D filter's impeller is dying. I'll be getting my XP1 this week. I'll just take half the filter media from my old tank and put it in the XP1, but for your bio wheel, I'd think you could leave it on your tank for a couple of weeks.

3 weeks should be plenty, 4 definitely.

Actually Val;

When I took a look at the cost of media
as well as the price of the filter itself.
The filstar turns out to be a better value
doing a much better job at a lower price.
I have always wanted a canister filter.

I agree with Rollin, I run a Emp 280 on my 55 gallon, but I am gana get and Emp 400, and keep the Emp 280 on there to with the Emp 400.

So just keep the Fil XP1 for another tank you get.
