Please help me! I have a very, very sick common pleco. He is very dear to me. He lives alone in 36 gallon tank and is about 10 inches long and 7 years old. I use 2 filters and aeration. To make a long story short, about 2 months ago, my pleco developed white stuff and bug eyes and I took a pic of him to my LFS and they gave me Jungle Fungus Eliminator. I did 3 treatments (they told me do 1 treatment every 24 hours for 3 days w/ a 25% water change before each treatment), waited 10 days, did another 3 treatments (it hadn't went away-but he was acting better) and waited 10 days and now I did two more treatments and he got worse... I was then advised to put the carbon back in and do water changes to get the meds out as it was making him worse. This was about a month ago. I don't know he's any better or worse. Some days I think he's getting better and others he's extremely lethargic.

I am now doing a 30-40% water change/vacuum every 2-3 days (have been doing this for about a month now) because he seems to do a little better when I keep the water changed. I am using Amquel+ and Novaqua+. He isn't really eating -some days I think he does, but very little -the problem is I don't see poop! His belly looks like it always did. He stays at the bottom of the tank and moves every now and then. He rarely attaches himself to the sides of the tank or anything else for that matter and doesn't swim (this is his "normal" behavior). Some days he is in the same place for 24 hours straight! I just don't know what else to do to help him! He does swim away and attach himself to the back when I vacuum, but only then.

Even though I'm doing frequent water changes, I still am getting white cottony stuff floating in his tank sometimes. (Seems like when he doesn't eat-but I am vacuuming every 2-3 days!!!) He still has the white around his eyes and they still seem to bulge a bit. Could it be bacterial instead of fungal...or both? How can I get rid of this? Can I give any other meds to him? Melafix or something like that? I know Plecos can be sensitive. Should I raise the temp? Please help me! I'm so desperate! And thank you!

Again, he is by himself- no other fish or live aquatic plants in the tank w/ him. He is fed Hikari sinking algae tabs and every now and then he gets a nice slice of zucchini- but the last time I offered it he wouldn't eat it and that's when I knew he was sick and then the following day I noticed the eyes and white stuff.

36 gallon with 1 aquaclear 50g filter and one whisper 20 gallon filter and 2 oxygen air things and 2 heaters for even distribution. It has been established for 3 years.

Temp: 78 degrees

These were done with a lab kit:
pH: 6.6
ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0

These are as close as I can come with one of the quick dip sticks:
The hardness seems to be quite soft (less than 25 maybe?)
alkalinity is very low (like 0-40) (how do I adjust this?)

He has no tankmates- he lives alone and the only additions were a couple of plastic type plants purchased from a pet store (there were a Christmas present!) and they were put in around mid January.

Just looking at the pictures, I see nothing wrong. It could be bacterial, perhaps something clogging up his stomach. I really don't know. If no one here answers you, you might try planet catfish.

The white stuff around his eyes never used to be there and his eyes are "buggier" than they are usually. He is very lethargic and doesn't hang on the sides nor does he seem to eat much and never poops! Thanks for the other site recommendation. I'll also try there! But if anyone else has any thoughts, I would love to hear it!

I would guess plecos can get popeye as well as any other fish. If it is popeye, it's probably a bacterial infection. I have treated several goldfish with popeye with Maracyn II or Maracyn TC (tetracycline) and had them heal successfully. I am not too sure about Melafix when treating "scaleless fish." Maybe someone else can weigh in on that. Some people have success with Melafix; others don't. I would try super clean water first. If that doesn't work, I would suggest considering an antibiotic.

Jungle "Fungus Clear" I believe, has both antibacterial and antifungal agents-- this is largely due to the fact that people mistake common bacterial infections (like columnaris) for fungus. It just may not have been the right treatment in this case.

The picture doesn't seem that abnormal to me, but only you know his behavior, and if it doesn't seem right, you are right to look for reasons.

Thanks. I have been doing large water changes every 2-3 days and his water quality seems to be the best it can be. The white never used to be there and it came at the same time he began acting lethargic. Again, he is not eating or pooping, so I am certain he is ill. And he is not sucking the side of the tank or anything. I'm just at a loss on how to help him.

I don't know what's wrong with him either, but you're doing the thing we suggest first and that's plenty of fresh water changes. If his eyes are a bit "buggy" looking to you, I would go ahead and treat with Maracyn II for bacterial infection before he gets any weaker.

One question not related to his health....why are you using two products to treat your tap water: Amquel+ and Novaqua+ ?

Sorry to hear about your fish! I agree with others that he may have what's called "pop eye." It's a bacterial infection.

As Somervell said, the Jungle fungus med is also antibacterial, so that may have been a good choice. The problem with bacterial infections in fish is that, without a microscope and a vet's lab, it's impossible to know which bacteria are responsible for the infections. The best choice is to get something that says "broad spectrum," since it will be effective against many types of bacteria.

Here's a great link to a site about antibacterial/antibiotic fish meds: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumMedication2.html

You're doing the right thing by keeping the water clean. I have cured bacterial infections with clean water alone, and no meds.

I don't know if this is a factor or not, but do you have any driftwood in the tank? I read online somewhere once that plecos get a certain mineral from driftwood that they need to stay healthy, so they need some driftwood in their tank to chew on.

Just an idea.... I hope he feels better soon!

I don't know why I'm using both amquel and novaqua. I guess I figured it would make the water better? I had started using melafix and pimafix on him...I've done that for 2 days now...do you think I should stop that and go right for the maracyn two? I just want to help him to get better. And I will definitely get him driftwood...should I wait until he's better to introduce it, or should I put it in now? Thanks so much!!!

I would go ahead and get some driftwood for him. I would boil the wood for a bit, and then let it cool. Once cooled I'd put it in there. If it's not water logged I'd tie a rock to it, or attach it to some slate to keep it down.

Okay...I'll go in the morning for driftwood. What about the maracyn two? Should I stop the melafix and pimafix and start treating with the stronger maracyn?
