I've used leaves (oak, hickory) from time to time but never saw any amazing results. Or, well, any results at all except that after awhile my tanks looked a lot like my yard, which I found depressing, so pulled them out.

of the tank I mean. not the yard. That would be a pointless effort given the tree cover here. :)

sounds harmless at any rate, and might be worth trying if you are attempting to breed eggbearers. Let us know how the experiment works.

OK so I read it carefully and thought again. Where is this snip of an article from? When was it written? I used leaves in my fish tank 4 years ago. They were OK for decoration and my snails loved noshing on 'em but as my plants grew in I ended up taking them out. Leaves in bodies of water is common enough but many of us like fully planted tanks so many of us don't have room for leaves.

They look great in barren driftwood tanks that mimic a subdued blackwater amazonian-biotope.

Leaves are often used in tanks.. helps add tannins and lowers pH in tanks with RO/DI.

I use catappa leaves in my ALtum tank.. as mentioned.. RO/DI with these and the pH is very low which inhibits bacteria growth..it can be useful in hatching out eggs for fish from this region(Amazon)
