Using peat to alter ph

I have read peat moss can be used to naturally lower ph and I would like to try. Has anybody used this method and if so with what success? Also, the peat is somewhat fine in consistency. If any one has done this, how did you contain the peat? I would like to place it in one of the filter trays of my trickle filter.
My water runs at 7.7 to about 8.0. I create my water with 70% R/O water with 30% of my very hard well water. This gives me a KH of about 6 but this still seems too much for store bought chemical additives to lower the ph as my water seems to resist them.

Any ideas?

What is wrong with a KH of 6? "Store bought chemical additives" are usually a mistake and very rarely provide stable conditions.

I've experimented with peat. Primarily what it will do is soften the water anyway, which you could already do with a different r/o and well mix. It will also darken the water. The neons did love it when I did it, but it didn't really do much for the hardness and pH... And the chemicals will just make the pH yoyo... I have hard well water here as well. I'm thinking cichlids
