My LFS told me I can use pickling lime from the supermarket for my drip dosing one drip per second with a mixture of one teaspoon of lime to one gallon of water. Has anyone used this and is it effective?

It is an excellent and economical way to keep your calcium and alkalinity up. Normally it is set up to drip your topoff water in overnight- the very high pH of limewater counteracts the normal pH drop most folks see when the lights are off.

I'm a fairly new guy on the reefing scene and immediately started using pickling lime. Aside from the calcium benefit, it helps stabilize pH (with the SLOW DRIP!), and precipitates phosphates out of solution-- awesome!

I got three pounds of it for less than $6 at the local Piggly Wiggly (yes that's actually a grocery store). Works like a charm.
