Using Seashells as decor

I have just moved to NC from MI. After my very first trip to the ocean, I came across several beautiful seashells on the beach that would look nice in some form of aquarium. Since I have only freshwater tanks, is it possible to de-salt these shells for use? I've cleaned and used FW shells before, but I've heard/read somewhere that you can't just use SW shells in a FW tank....anyone have any info for me?
Thanks so much,
Siren

the sea shells will most likely release calcium in the tank and change the hardness of the water.

unless you have 'hard' water fish, it is usualy not advisable to add the sea shells.

Plus shells are a great place for african fry to hide.

if you can find some aquarium-safe epoxy you can spray and cure the shells before adding them so that they do not break down in the tank and affect your water. otherwise, don't add them (unless, as suggested above, you have fish that will appreciate the different ph)

Hmm that is a neat idea, does anyone know where I could find aquarium safe epoxy in a spray? Ive never seen any?

yeah i would like to second that question (hope you dont mind) i have some great shells i would like to add and havent' been able too bc it would raise my ph so if any one knows where to get this "aquarium epoxy" please tell!!!
