I'm going away for a week on sun. and just wanted to know your favorite 7-day vacation feeder brand. Currently I have 12 fish in a 25 gal.
Also, do these things really work? I've always had someone available to come and feed my babies while I'm away.

Depending on what fish you keep and whether any are juveniles, I'd rather have someone feed 'em for you or just not feed them for that week. The auto-feeders can malfunction and dump too much food in the water, wrecking your water quality/fishes' health.

There are 2 types I can think of. Mechanical ones that work on a timmer to release measured ammounts of food, and the "pyramid" types that disolve over time.

The mechanical feeders can malfunction and dump too much food, and the disolving ones tend to foul your water. They also contain plaster witch is not really good for the fish. If i had to choose one, I would go with the mechanical one and only add 2 or 3 days worth of food. Your fish should be able to live a week with no food whatsoever, esoecially if you power feed a few days before you leave.

I'm talking about the ones that slowly dissolve in the tank gradually revealing food.

hmm.. I could probably arrange that. Thanks for the advice!

If you get a a good brand of feeder. Like Aquarium Pharasutical(sp) it doesn't change the ph or anything. Or atleast it didn't change mine. If you can get someone to do it do that. But I was desprate.

I'm not endorsing this site, but I saw these at Petsmart the other day and thought they were interesting. Anyone have any thoughts about it? In my tank it wouldn't last nearly as long as it says due to my snails. The stuff actually looks like the gel food I make for my snails LOL!

For a week though, the fish will be fine. Hungry and happy to see you when you return, but fine :) I recently left for 6 days. All three of my tanks were just as I left them, even with a power outage during my vacation. Even the platy fry survived just fine.

i tested some of that dissolving food.put in what i figured a days worth would be.looked good dissolving but when i woke up it was all gone.i`m sure pleco ate it all.next test i will use half a small clay pot and protect the food with that mesh they sell oranges in. :look:
