I'm trying to plan a vacation for the girlfriend and myself around September. The problem is most vacations I take are ones where I have a few days off and sit in the room watching TV by myself, or I take a few hour trip to a family's house and do the same.

Searching online for vacation ideas hasn't helped me any...everywhere I find is big and touristy, and quite frankly, I'm tired of dealing with people and want to have a nice get-away. I'm kinda picturing a nice little place on a lake or "on the mountain" where I can fish, jetski, maybe hike around a bit...stuff that's kinda lazy, but still outdoorsy. Big stuff like Jetski's would need to be rentable...I'd prefer to go somewhere where I won't be bothered, but I could easily run and grab stuff from a local store...have running water, a flushing toilet, and electricty...you know, the modern convinences. I don't want to completely ditch society...just far enough away that I only have to deal with people when I'm going to want something from them.

I'd prefer the place to be somewhere "closer to home" so travel isn't that bad...somewhere in the Southeast would be nice, as we'll be leaving/starting from the GA/SC border area. The only place I could really find on Google was up in BFE Winsconsin, and I'd prefer something a little closer then that.

Anyone have any ideas of a place like this? Any links that my Google searches missed in the mess of generic search terms?

If you change your mind and are willing to travel Lake Tahoe is lovely! Hubby and I also really enjoy a few days in Monterey, Cali (you could also get in an aquarium visit) or Napa Valley.....

Maggie valley is nice year round, most of my family lives there. There's plenty to hike and fish in the area, you can find cabin rentals far from the madding crowd, but still close enough for grocery shopping. Water skiing rentals is possible on lake junaluska I think... September means no snow, but it also means perfect temps outside for long hikes, swimming, and fly fishing. We've got some of the best trout streams in the country.
