Hi Guys,
This may sound a little funny, but can you guys recommend any vegetarian cichlids for a 65gal indoor pond? I'm just finishing contruction on it now (i'll post pics when she's all done), and as at the point now where I need to make the choice to either go the cichlid route, or a peaceful commun. tank. (ie. tetras, pleco, etc.). I myself am vegan, and being such, would rather not go out and buy food for them which contains meat, so the obivious next thought is, keep vegetarians!
Thanks for your ideas,
Andrew

P.S.
Running a fluval 404 when it's finished. Pond dimensions are 5'x2'x1' foot deep.

most of the smaller rift lake cichlids from africa are primarily vegetarians mostly the mbunas. however any flake food is going to have some animal mixed in with it. there are no fully vegetarian foods available. if your looking for fully vegetarian i don't think that you could really do that. but i could be wrong.

Most of the Central American Vieja are herbivores. Fenestratum is the smallest species I can think of, and they will reach 8-9" total.

Here's a few good pictures of this species.

Vieja bifasciata and synspilum are very similiar in color and pattern (red head, rainbow colored body, yellow fins) but grown much larger (12-14")

Other species have much different color patterns. Regani are all green, Argenea are all white, Zonatum are mostly blue, Maculicauda is white, with a vertical black stripe down the center and a red tail and red throat, and so on.

Good luck with your pond
