Hey everything ive read has told me that silverdollars and herbaviors and only eat plant matter and vegi flakes, well im here to prove that wrong, mine in particular have eated anything i put into my tank, they eat bloodworms when i feed my angels, and ive also seen them nibble a bit on diced shrimp i add in there, They feed in a more vicious manner than i heard they would, once i put flakes in, they swim up and eat most before the angels get any, i learned to feed at two different areas of the tank, anyone else have vicious silvers

I thinkn what they mean when they say they are herbs. is that if you put live plants in your tank they will be eaten. I have a pair and they eat ANYTHING and when they get bigger are known to pick off smaller fish such as neons and cardinals. I dont think its so much that they are vicious but more so that they are very voracious eaters

Yea, I have six of them and mine school and swarm like a pack of pirahna when the food hits the water. Doesn't matter what I'm feeding... flakes, frozen blood worms, emerald entree, white worms, they'll even take off with the pleco's spirulina disks! They swim around the tank with them like a prize and eat them slowly as they dissolve!

I agree!

My three, Silver Dollars act more like ominavoirs than herbavoirs. Given a choice they seem to like the life foods more than plant based foods. I wonder at times if this is healthy for them. But with a tank that has other fish that require more protein I'm not sure how to feed them so they eat a apporpiate diet.

As for tank size. I would say 5 Silver Dollars for a 55 gal. as long as you had no other large fish. Maybe a pair angle fish would be OK with them... but I think that starts to push the limit as the fish grow to full size.

Somethings to consider. They like a planted tank. And yes they will eat them. They like the new leaves as they are budding out. But they really like the hiding places the plants provide. Also they are light sensitive, so provide cover for them to hide from the harsh aquarium lights used to grow the plants.

well my plants are all fake b/c the angels eat my plants too, so the tank with angels and SD's are all fake. And yes they love the swivel right into the little jungle of plants i have, they stay there until feeding or until i leace the room, then they swim around with the angels

MY sd'S are growing soo nicely and hardy, They arent as shy anymore. Im planning to take some of the jungle out and put a rock formation.
