Wal-Mart woes

Just got back from Wal-mart. I keep telling myself not to go to the aquariums but I just cannot help it. They had re-stocked with all kinds of tempting fish that my local, caring lfs never seems to have. There were oto's and cories and gouramis, for instance. The conflict enters in when I think I should not buy any fish-related stuff there - I don't want to encourage them in their stupid stocking practices, like pleco's and oscars. :mad:

At the same time I feel drawn to saving as many fish as I can. The peppered cories were tiny and cute. Alas, not enough tank space at home yet... :sad:
 
I have decided to no longer buy ANY fish from walmart...except maybe a betta just to get the poor thing out of the cup....My local walmart for some reason likes to sell brackish fish as freshwater.....violet gobys and spotted puffers for example. That ticks me off.... :rant:
 
You know, I'm not really trying to sound mean but. Whining about it isn't going to fix the problem. If you are really that upset about the matter then do something about it. Besides most fish stocked in a Wal-Mart don't stay for very long. If they were to set up to accommodate the fish's permanent home size imagine the cost and the size of it. The same goes for any fish store.

I dont know about your LFS but mine doesnt put brackish fish in freshwater...they have tanks specifically for brackish fish. As far as permanent housing goes...no one said anything about it, not that walmart couldnt afford it anyway. I dont expect permanent housing, but at least put the fish with compatible species in the correct water. That is all I am asking. When you put fish that dont belong together in the same tank it gives the buyer the belief that those fish do well together in a long term situation.
 
Strange, I've never seen brackish water fish at any Wal-Marts I've been to. But that is not to say that some don't have them. I wouldn't get to mad at Wal-Mart in general, it is probably the manager and employees for the department that are putting the fish in improper areas. It all boils down to the people in charge of a particular area not the business at large.
 
Our local Walmart actually has the best conditions for fish of any of the stores in town that sell them (2 LFS, Petco, Walmart). Their tanks are always clean and the only tanks I see problems with are the fancy goldfish ("under observation" more than not) and mollies (they just don't do well with Molly's there). The 2 LFS have nasty water. Nasty. One also sells puppies out of TINY little cages. Rodents with stinky cages. The whole store smells like pi**. The 2nd LFS isn't quite as bad but the staff is so unfriendly it's ridiculous. (Like hello folks, don't you think you'd like to cultivate some new customers by being willing to discuss your products?) Their tanks are also kind of gross at times. Petco is better but has had some disease issues lately that are way beyond their norm. It'll be months before I'm comfortable buying anything there, and only then with a 2 month quarantine. That leaves me Walmart...or the better of the 2 LFS (the one with bad help, not puppies in what are not much more than tall rabbit cages.)
 
well i was browsing thru the wally world(for those of u who dont know thats wal mart) pet dept. yesterday and much to my surprise i saw a tank full of polypterus senegalus ( dinosaur eels as they are sometimes called). anyway to make a long story short they had about 20 senegals mixed with 1" peppered corys, some type of platty, and small plecos. well can u say smorgassboard there were 2 senegals swimming vigorously around the very small tank each with a dead fish that looked like a fresh kill. these were not small senegals i am talking in upwards of 5 to 6".....lol i just had to laugh to myself.
 
*horrified* those poor sweet little cories!!!! *mourns*

i still have flash backs to the time when the fish store guy said "i'll show u why you don't want this in your tank" and dropped two poor innocent little feeder fish in there. the poor man thought i was going to cry, faint or hyperventilate. maybe all three. he led me away quickly thank god.

i know its natural for them but i can't watch that. i could never buy a fish that eats other fish on a regular basis because i would know i was dooming that poor feeder fish when there was a slim possibility that someone would take him home and stick him in their pond (my mum does that :) i love my mum)
 
Hmm. Hate to say it but wal mart fish live the longest out of anything ive ever owned. Maybe mine has a good supplier. My sharks and the such are about 7 years young and were from a local wal mart. Even my wal mart danios lived to be 6.
 
Not buying fish from wallmart aint gonna change it thing...thats not even a problem they even care about as you can see. Walmart dose more damange to ppl then fish if you actualy know what is going on.
