at petsmart here in chicago il, you can get a 55 gal all-glass "kit" with everything included for $149.99, you can use the other $50 to make or get a stand made for that.. just a thought..

I'm not sure how the lfs out our way are but here in norcal you can get a 55 with hood and light fixture for like $70. An AC 300 or 500 for $40 and a heater for $20. That would put you right around $130. That would leave you $70 for other small things like a thermometer, water conditioner, decor and substrate.... This is the store I deal with mostly here in the bay area...

if he spends 200 bucks on a 55 gallon setup hes just going to have to spend atleast twice that within a few months to move all those fish into an even bigger tank.
