Came home on Monday to the dead fish smell from my tank, and after a bit of looking I found a blue gourami dead and stuck on the window on this castle decoration in my tank. This castle has been the home for my Pleco for months and most fish just stay away.

But I guess he went exploring and got himself stuck and died trying to wiggle out a small window. Not sure how long he had to suffer and I feel bad, but I can't see pulling out the castle since the Pleco loves his home. Its been in there for over a year without incident.

Am I wrong to leave it in the tank?

Only if the same thing can happen to other fish. Maybe you could get some aquarium sealant and glue a little plastic mesh screen over the window so nothing else can get through, but it still allows water flow.

Don't feel bad. Sometimes these things happen. Once I had an aquarium rock in one of my tanks and the rock was the kind that has a hole in it. Well, wouldn't you know, I had a fish get stuck in the hole and could not get himself out. He was just too big. I removed the rock from the tank with the fish still stuck in the rock and carefully and quickly broke the rock to free the fish and put him back in the tank. The fish died anyways probably from internal injuries. Sometimes, they just do dumb things.

Some types of loaches are notorious for doing this. They like to hide in really tight spots and have been known to get themselves stuck. Take a look at this I found on loaches.com: http://www.schmerlen.de/video/histrion-out1.avi doesnt show him getting stuck but you can see the desire for them to explore and go places they shouldnt!
