Yesterday I did a 25% water change after lunch, then I went to work shortly after. When I got home around 9:30 last evening all my little fry, a few platys and a wcmm were just hanging at the surface. I thought something is wrong so I tested my water. Everything was good and PH,KH and GH were the same as always, no fluctuations. So I checked the temp and it was up to 84 (a little high). I have HOB filters and my water level was right up to where the water comes in. So I took out a couple gallons of water to create more agitation. Over the next couple of hours the fish slowly left the top and started roaming the tank. With the warm temp and the high water level do you think that there wasn't enough oxygen? Everyone is fine today. Temp cooled down overnight to 78. I also kept the water level down a bit. :help:

That sounds like my tank. At the beginning of summer my Platies where like that too because of the high temps. But after a while (1 month) they got used of it, and now rome the tank at any temp up to 90F. So if it happens again, put a bubber in if possible and just let the tank go. Over time the fish should expect the higher temps.

Could be, though if they were just hanging around the surface, it doesn't sound like it was very serious--they would have been gasping at the surface, with noticable agitation if the oxygen levels were really low. Any plants in there?

chlorine?

With a 25% WC it might have been a reaction to chlorine. what conditioner do you use? Are you sure you added it?

well water

If it was well water, then I'll vote for low oxygen. I've read that you ought to aerate well water before using it in a fish tank.
