i just got my first case of ich in about a year :)
i got ich guard and am currently treating. i am treating as recommended by the bottle.
this is about 4th day of treatment, and signs are slowing but not stopping.
it is a 55 gal comm tank with swordtails, guppies, mollies, and chory.
i guess my concern is why i got the case of ich.
i did a water change, about 25% and the local shop says that is probably why i got it.
i question is, i try to match the water temp outta the faucet as best i can.
the shop says the water has to be almost exactly the same temp during the change.
any advice on how to do this or general advice on how to do the water change?
thanks alot all

ive added water that was about 20 degrees cooler often and havent had any problems.

its usually a combination of things for a major ich outbreak to start, hows the water quality and are the fish stressed or new or anything?

water all been recently tested, all things checked out
ph, nitrates, nitrites, all that stuff.
no one is really new, and its just one of my swordtails so far.
the bottle says i need about a 25% change, but i dont want to make it worse.
what to do?

water changes are necessary to maintain your tank, I've never heard of one causing ich. I'd set up a hospital tank if possible. i keep a 10 gallon around just for this purpose, then perhaps you have a better chance of keeping it from spreading throughout your tank. As far as water temps. go at water changes...just use your thermomer from the tank and hold it in the palm of your hand under the faucet until you get the desired temp, or if you use a bucket put the thermometer in the bucket and add hot or cold water until you get the temp. you want.

well, once its in the tank, its necessary to treat the whole tank to rid it of all of it, is it not?
if i catch it early enough a hospital tank would work i think, but i assumed that once i notice it, it was in the tank enough to get to the other fish.

if i do set up a hospital, do i need to set up everything in terms of filtration, heat, and all the stuff i have in my 55 gal?

Keep treating the tank and raise the temp to 86F. That will help kil off the ich. The water change did not cause the ich outbreak. You already obviously had ich in your tank and it just picked that moment to rear its ugly head. The most important thing for you to do right now is to make sure to kill it all off or it will keep coming back. That means treating the tank for at least a week after the last signs of ich are present and keep that temp up. Adding a tsp of salt (table salt will do) dissolved in change water per gallon of total tank volumn will also help kill off the ich.

It may seem like a lot of work but in the end you will be ich free and not have to worry about that disease.

Fish can live for a long time with minute amounts of ich and this is why it all of a sudden seems to appear.

In the future quarentine all new fish coming in for at least a week and this should prevent all sorts of problems and diseases from getting into your main tank. Also when people ask about your water parameters it is best to post actual numbers and not just everything is fine.

Hope that all works out for you.
