Water changes, best way to do it!

I was, every time the late goldfish's tank got dirty I did a complete water change every time it got dirty, cleaning the gravel, plastic plants, castle decoration, filter and tank with tap water then using the water detox stuff filled it up again and put him back. Then one day, 2 weeks since I did the whole change thing, he was eating the left over food off the bottom and poof the next day, well you know! :sad

Dont feel too bad. Thats how almost everyone does it before they learn the proper way. I shudder when I think about how I used to "take care" of my fish when I was a kid. :)

Thank you so much, I do feel better now. I just keep rehashing the site of all that food at the bottom, which I figured he would eat, and eat he did, and pretty got poisoned to death.

I got a master test kit today. The ammonia level is way high, the PH is at 7.2 but the nitrite level is 0. I am going to do a 50% water change tonight, vac the gravel w/the new vac I just got and test again. I want to fix the problem before the nitrites get to high. Our tap water readings were a lot less on the ammonia scale.

I have a betta, 2 gallon tank and the water temp is at 65. Kind of cold? He doesn't seem to mind it. I have turned up our heater in the house at it gets quite cold once the sun goes down.

I hope this helps. It is also so bizarre to me that the water is so crytal clear and the levels are so crazy!

Thanks again!!!!
