Water Hardness question

The water from the taps in my area is very hard. Will letting the water sit reduce it's hardness? If not, what are some ways to reduce the hardness of my water? I am thinking of getting a big 50g RubberMaid trash can and filling it with water that I can use for my tanks. Thoughts? Thanks.

I dont think allowing the water to sit out will have an effect on hardness. It will help remove chlorine and things like that. Why do you want to reduce your hardness? I have a hardness of over 350 which is very hard. My fish do fine. Messing with your water hardness could inturn mess with your ph. As well to reduce your hardness means less buffers, and that can lead to some big problems. You coud get an R/O unit but they cost a good amount and don't give you very good output. I believe it's measured by gallons per day. If I'm wrong then somebody correct me, but I believe thats what I've read.

Yeah I would ask you first of all, what is your general hardness reading? Anything under 300 is manageable... and as you have read, some people who have levels well over 300 still have successful setups.
