Hi! I bought 2 blue rams today! After I had stuck them in the tank, I tested the water.

0 ammonia and 5ppm nitrites

I dropped the water level about 5 inches and refilled with clean water. I just tested again and....

0 ammonia
5ppm nitrites
0 nitrates

To me, this is a really odd result. Usually my water is cycled after about a week because I always have media, gravel, something to use to cycle my tank faster, but this is obviously not a result of a cycled tank. What do I do and will this level of nitrites be healthy for the fish for a few days???

BTW, my tank is a 37 gallon tall.

HELP!

What is really odd is that before I returned my 2 bumblebee cichlids, the water was fine, 0 all across the board. So why the sudden change in water parameters???? I don't want the fish hurt..... HELP!
