by our calculations she is due in about a week or week half at most end of jan or first few days of feb

each of her hiding places would take me about 1 second to clear out should the need be

for the clearing of the pups i have my fluval primer ready to clear their air passage

from what we were told she has no probs with whelping and she is just turning 5

i was thinking of a funny way to answer back 2 words to those who say the two words spay an neuter and i came up with it

the two words i have for all of you who are advocating spay an neuter are these two key words

STUD PANTS :silly:

mr spike can not in any way do his business when we make him wear his stud pants :headbang2:

Advocating spay and neuter isnt a bad thing..:). As long as ppl are educated concerning it, to each there own..

Before she is ready to have the pup, she will most likely stop eating, and her body temp will drop, keep a thermometer on hand to check when you think she is about due. A dogs normal temp is 101.4. As far as having spots everywhere for her to choose from, Personally I would set her up a private place now and get her used to it. A place away from all family activity that is quiet. This way you want have to hunt her down once you notice her missing to find that shes already had the pups or is in danger. Also, it will allow you to prepare the area with the things that you will need in case she has probs and to take away the afterbirth if you do not want her to eat it. Most often with smaller dogs and first time moms, they do not like to or know how to break the sack and this is probably where you will most likely have to intervene if you do at all by cutting it open, yes you will need scissors or a blade for this, and cutting the umbilical cord. Be sure to have gloves, either latex or food grade to handle the pups with and that you work with clean hands. You will also have to massage the pups vigourously to stimulate them to breathe if this happens. Keep clean fresh towels, preferably warmed to change out the wet ones with. You can also help the mother dry the pups with these. Another note about the location, and keeping it out of high traffic areas, or family areas is that this will keep the area somewhat disease free because ppl arent walking over and tracking disease from outside the home in to this area, as well as make sure its not a drafty area and is not close to heating or air vents, radiators, etc..pretty much any thing that controls the temp of the house.

As sad as it may sound, you may also want to prepare ahead of time by purchasing a couple bottles and some milk replacer just in case she refuses to feed, doesnt have milk, or comes down with masitis (of which will kill the pups if they drink infected milk).

Hope all turns out good for the mom and pups, post pix!

Congrats and good luck with the puppies!

I have a comment though, something that struck me as being weird. You said all three of your shelter dogs were mean. I would just like to point out that any dog, regardless of breeding and where you got them, has the ability to be mean-spirited. We had a cocker spaniel that we got from a family friend who was the breeder. She was very sweet for a while, but then started turning mean, snapping at anybody for no reason. It turned out she had something wrong with her...I believe a thyroid problem (this happened several years ago, I was only ten, so I can't remember exactly what was wrong health-wise). On the other hand, I have known many, many wonderful adopted dogs and cats (one of these cats is lying next to me right now). My point is, though, there are many reasons a dog can be mean. Health problems (like our cocker) and the way they were raised (which may have been what was wrong with your dogs) are only two reasons. Just please keep in mind that although these are dogs that you will have from birth, they too could turn out being mean.

not all of the dogs were mean one was simply mean spirited it insisted that our furniture was the place to do its business , buddy was mean , and the other one hated babies

i think what some people are saying is that...they dont want you to have 500 puppies in 1 house!!!!!

i wish you the best of luck!!!!!
