Petsmart is all of a sudden selling supposedly hard-to-find fish (at least within a 50 mile radius of where I live!) that don't fit in with their typical bread 'n' butter line of stock. They have sawbwa resplendens 4.00 ea., ember tetras 3.30 ea., celebes rainbows 9.00 ea. and peacock gudgeons 10.00 ea. To my surprise (not), none of these fish are selling there! Most people who rely on petsmart for all their fishkeeping needs have no clue about any of these fish and wouldn't want to pay the sticker price to find out about 'em...

This right after having cleared out several questionable species
(Leporinus fasciatus, leaf fish, several predatory larger cats, redsnook, certain GF)...

I'm thinking either they're trying to keep aquarists interested and cycling through different types of tanks, or they just lack direction.

I love celebes rainbows, I bought them all when they were reduced to sale plus my 15% discount when I used to work at a Petsmart.

meh, why not? try it out, if it sells keep in it stock, if it doesn't, don't order it next week. i don't think it's a bad thing....

I don't think It's a bad thing either, not for customers, anyways. Some stores near me are terrible with keeping their fish alive, and there isn't an exception for the more expensive and rare fish they're currently stocking. I think it's a bad thing for them, and I just think it's weird that they can't see that they're losing money as a whole.

Usually pet store managers can Special Order certain types of animals. But usually Corporate gives certain fish to certain to other Petsmarts, or each store has the same stock. Which is completely different where I live, where 3 cities I been to had diffrent particular species of fish. There is a list of all the fish and any new ones in each fish shipping day. I don't see anything wrong with asking an associate if you can see the list.

The one I work for just got bristlenose plecos and orange von rio tetras (aka flame tetras). The selection has to do with a combination of popularity, availability from the distributor, and profit margin. There are certain fish that are always available due to constant demand (neons, guppies, oscars, etc), and other tanks that rotate through different stock every few months based on the above.

I worked at 2 different stores. I kept asking the pet care manager request that we would get NO pacus and fewer Oscars. Didn't help. I did buy every single Espei Rasbora that we had, though... On sale added to the 15% employee discount.
I got so tired of trying to explain that plecos will not eat poop, Goldfish get huge and yes, you have to change the water regularly. *sigh*
