So, I'm cleaning my chemical lab today and a notice an old bottle with a crack in it. I think... hmmm that's not good. So I start to move the rest of the chemical off that shelf and bang... the bottom and top of the bottle seperate.
Oh crap. I check the label and find the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Calcium Carbonate... well that can't be too bad. Until I read where when it comes into contact with water, it forms aceytlene (yeah, the welding gas) and calcium hydroxide (a base that would cause your tank water to jump to a pH of about 12). Man...
So I tell the boss, get the spill cleaned up. Try not to breathe noxious fumes. Clean up something that will hurt if it comes into contact with my sweaty hands (Yes, I had gloves on) or my sinuses.
Oh, and drink lots of coke to neutralize any base that does get into my body.
Weeee.....
