Went Fishin'. . . What did I catch?

Are the "bulbs" of Red Devils developed later in life?

The fish I have doesn't have a bulb so unless they develop later on in life dcouture20 may be on to something. I am using this pic as a reference:

I'm also not certain that #5 is a red devil. They usually have way bigger eyes and don't have blue fins below the gill plate. I also lean more towards a red zebra ( hybrid).

#1 looks like a pseudotropheus demasoni. The color change would justify this as well.

The so called bulb develops later on in life and is called a nuchal hump (spelling???) also some Red Devils do not develop this especially when kept alone. Also Red Devils when small have big Eyes like that unless the ones near my pad just look bug eyed and end up looking like a normal fish when older. Another thing the stripe is on one side only not on both which further supports it being a red devil sice when they have black markings they are not exact duplicates on the opposite side unlike most african cichlids where the patter is the same on both sides like I said most not all but most. I could almost say for 100% that its a RD since pics are slightly blurry and you dont have multiple angles like a outline for instants or mug shot.

GER1023 you are right with everything you say. The only reason that I said that it might be a red zebra is because of the blue fins which I have never seen on a red devil, but have on a red zebra. I was also giving the fish store the benifit of the doubt and just providing a different option to look at. If the picture was better the answer would be obvious.

I hear what your saying about the color on the fin but that could just be a flash or something even the way it is has the RD shape. But yeah to be positive another pic would be needed.

Seeing that all the others are africans I tend to think #5 is a red zebra.

This is a poor picture of one of my red zebras, notice the shorter face. The ones I have range in color from almost yellow to orange to red.
Her are some of my red devils

notice how the face is longer especially on juvenile fish.

I would say it is a red zebra almost definitly - it seems longer and has less height top to bottom, the placement of the dorsal and pelvic fins seems in line with a zebra too.

Though you never say never , especially with an unclear photo.
