we're having a cold snap here....

winter seems to be starting off on the right foot, although this week of warm weather normally comes a week earlier (this same warm weather was here the first week of November in 05) so a warm spell at this time of year is normal where i come from, whats odd is how cold it has been last week, i hope that we have a good winter, I havnt had a real snow day from school in the last two years (excepting freezing rain)

the coldest day last year was exactly 0 degrees f.

and that why they call it the windy city
where are you from??

I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, along the shores of Lake Superior, and winter is a battle for me every year. It's a double edged sword, for anyone who has been here, it is abosulety gorgeous in the summer, most call it God's country. The winter is just awful, almost like punishment for having such gorgeous summers! The end of January, straight through February and most of March it is not unheard of for us to have weeks at a time with temps in the -20* range, add the winds whipping off the lake and the wind chill gets to -30*, no fun in my book!! Don't even get me started on the amount of snow we get............

K, my rant is over, I feel better! :D :D :D Trying to be positive, winter brings ice fishing, going to start snow shoeing, and maybe finally try my hand at skiing......

if you can beleive it, your winter is worse than mine temp wise. coldest it got here last year was -12, and that was only in the mornings for 2 days. also, winter up here in alaska is quite beautiful IMO. the skies are clear and blue 8 out of every 10 days in the winter here, vs. about 6 out of every 10 days in the summer. every morning i get watch the sun rise over the mountians. quite a nice sight. in my point of view, the winters up here are just as nice as the summers.

I lived in Petersburg from '89-'91 and then in Ketchikan from '95-'98. I also spent quite a bit of time in Kodiak the past few years, my ex-fiance was a commercial fisherman there.....thank god that ended. I would spend winter in Alaska anytime over spending it here, or most of the northern midwest for that matter! I hate that people have this preconcieved notion that Alaska is so cold.

The only bummer about living in Ketchikan was the rain!! People think that it rains a lot in Seattle......K-town has it beat by a long run, one year we got 180" of rain.....The neat thing about the rain though is that it is your household water supply. There are no wells on the island, each house has a large cistern that collects rainwater which is then filtered and piped into your house......that's the healthiest my hair has ever been!! :)

I've spent quite a bit of time in Anchorage, and really have no desire to return. In the mid '90s the police did an extremely good job of cleaning the city up and lowering crime, it was acutally an enjoyable place to be. After returning the past few years the city is once again falling apart IMO. I understand that Anchorage is quickly growing and expanding with huge population influxes but it has become a corrupt city full of crime and filth once again. To see the differences that 10 years can bring is just amazing. I'm not trying to dog your city, just telling you my experiences and feelings. :)

I would really love to return to the south east, I still have quite a large group of friends in the area. For anyone who has not been to south east Alaska I would really encourage you to consider visiting!! It will truly be a once in a life time experience!!

this is very true... I might be going to college in juneau just to live in the SE. and you know, it's being cleaned up once again. the crime rate has reduced dramatically and mountain view is no longer the ghetto it once was. (beleive me, I live there!) this is a very friendly city still. I guess anchorage has it's highs and lows....

It was 70 degrees and absolutely beautiful here in NYC - certainly rare for this time of year! Everyone was out and about in t-shirts!
