PLEASE if you dont know the answer and are making a guess dont give a reply I dont want to burn up this new pump with bad information - thanks

I bought a return pump its new for a great price but it is 1300GPH and its to powerful for my wet dry filter I want to use it on. My question is: will it harm the pump to restrict the output flow and if it wont cause damage to the pump should I restrict the INPUT port on the pump or the OUTPUT?

Thanks !

restriction should not be an issue if done correctly on most if not all pumps. the only way i can see it being an issue is if the impeller were not secured nicely in a balanced centered position.

since you have to restrict the flow it's best to do it on the output. restricting the input can definitely cause issues.

RC:

You restrict the output and no damage will occur.

Restriction of the input may yield a crispy critter.

OUTput restriction can be accomplished by using smaller diameter pipe and/or the use of a ball valve. I personally prefer the use of a ball valve as you can "dial in" the amount of flow you want.

I have a 900gph sub on my wet/dry with a ball valve to dial in the flow on a tidepool sump rated at 600gph... Has been running smoothly for 3 months now.

I would use a Y valve that can regulate the GPH between the return circuit and bleeds excess GPH recalculating back to the sump tank.

Adding a pressure gauge is a cool idea.

Restricting the output should be no different as far as the pump sees it as adding head height.....same net effect so, unless extreme, should be no issues......

went to home depot and got a 1inch ball valve works great ! Thanks
