I think it also depends on the fish's individual personality - any time you want to mix a betta (male or female) with any other fish, I think it's wise to have a contingency plan, just in case s/he's not compatible.
I had a male that got along very well with everything in my community tank for 6 months, and then turned into a terror overnight.
Generally speaking, bettas (male or female) will do fine in a community tank. They aren't usually aggressive towards other fish unless they have long fins that would cause the betta to mistake them for another betta. You do have to be careful not to put them into a tank with any nippy fish though or they'll get their fins nipped up quickly.
Bettas do seem to have very individual personalities though, so like Blinky said, a contingency plan is a good idea just in case things don't work out. On a side note, you can usually keep multiple female bettas together without issues, but even sometimes they can fight with each other.
In my experience, I've never had any trouble with female bettas together or with male bettas in a community tank, but I do know that some people have.
I tried to put my male betta in my community tank, I'm pretty sure he would have killed every single fish in there if given enough time, needless to say I removed him. So I was just curious if the female betta would be equally aggressive.
I put 5 female bettas in a 29 gallon with a few zebras. The zebras and bettas got along fine but the female bettas picked on each other quite a bit. No big fights but lots of bullying and fin nipping. I'm sure some females get along but mine didn't.
