I already have 2 clownfish, 1 algae blenny, 1 orange spotted watchmen goby, 11 hermit crabs(soon to be 30 hetmits) in my 55G tank. I have 75lbs of live rock too. I have a 35G sump, 3 maxijet 1200s with a wavemaker, and 2 60G HOB filters for circulation. I would like to add----

yellow watchmen goby

2 purple firefish

1 6 line wrasse

and 1 Bangai (high-fin) Cardinal fish

How does this stocking sound? Could I possibly add 1 or 2 more fish to this list like a royal gramma? Thank you and please comment

Seems like that is a lot of fish for a 55g, but yet you do have the 35 gallon sump which greatly helps with the water volume so i think you could definatly add at least 3-4 more fish. Your bio-load might be ok, but it might be too crowded for all of those fish is just the 55. I wouldn't imagine more that 5 fish in a 55g, and since you have the large sump, I don't know how it to applies as far allowing a larger stock.

Firefish are very docile fish. They really do not like anybody who have the slightest aggression on them. I would imagine that the wrasse could harass them, but I believe the clowns and cardinal would be ok. Don't know much about other gobies. Also, with that many fish in the 55, it could bother the firefish.

personally, i would drop two fish from the new additions as you are going to be pushing the limits, not really on bio-load, but actual space in the system...

I would loose the yellow watchman as you already have one, or do a deal on swapping them, and the cardinal...dropping the cardinal is just a personal preference i want to add...

Just an opinion

So I should drop the cardinal fish and the watchman goby? Sounds pretty reasonable. So like the 2 clowns, the orange spotted watchman goby, the 2 purple firefish, algae blenny, and the 6 line wrasse. I was also thinking about adding a cleaner shrimp to the group would that be ok?

I plan to turn the tank into a reef system in the near future, in like a few months. Would it be a problem to add about 25lbs more liverock into my system? Thank you very much for the help

no probs at all with the cleaner shrimp...

With the live rock, just keep adding a few lbs at a time, prolly every month, else you will start having a cycle again if your not carefull, and its not worth a risk to a new the system's stability...

Thanks for the help. Why would my tank go into a mini cycle if I added LR to fast? And do you have any experience feeding gobys? I'm asking to see what you or someone has used for food for them.

i have a goby in my tank, she just eats whatever goes by her little cave, stuff like brine, mysis, krill, and even flakes.

The LR could start a mini cycle due to the die off it would put into your tank. The die off would cause an ammonia spike, and possibly a mini cycle.

Which type of firefish do you plan on getting?

Fantastic fish. I have one right now, he is very entertaining. He tends to stay around his "dart hole" which is a piece of live rock surrounded by sand that he has made his home out of.

As far as getting 2, I don't think that Purple firefish specifically always get along with their opposite sex. I think you need to get them already paired, or if you are positive they are male and female. If you have a male and female its possible they could pair or they might not like each other. Probably a 50/50 shot. If you buy two of the same sex like two males, it will be a problem. I think you can do a decora and magnifica instead though, can't completely clarify that though.
