I assume your talking acrylic tank to stone. Although silicone sticks well to stone because of large and microscopic pours, normally aquarium silicone sticks poorly to acrylic and any plastic. However I believe GE makes a silicone spacifically designed to adhere well to plastics and stone. You'll have to venture to the GE silicone website to find it but I remember seeing it under material applications. That's what I would do anyway.

I would actually recommend drilling the rock and then attaching it to some eggcrate that sits in the back if you're looking to make a 3d backdrop. I would be nervous about putting something other than straight silicone into the tank as far as adhesive agents go. There are a couple of other builds on here that involve sculpting backgrounds with sprayfoam coated with concrete as well.

The only other thing I can think of though is epoxy. If it works you're in for a permanent bond, but I don't know what the solvent in epoxy would do to an acrylic tank wall. There's a chance it could melt into and weaken the tank wall, which wouldn't be good. I would test it out on a spare piece of acrylic first.

Now when you say you want to place them on the back of the tank, if you mean outside the tank on the back, that is a much easier solution. Just silicone glue the stones to a 1/4" thick wood backing and just hang the whole thing off the back of the tank rim or screw it to the wall and back the tank up against it.
