my tiger barbs were acting very weird today.I have 2 females & 2 males. They never had mated yet and I've had them together for about 3 months now.(Both males were bought at the same time from one pet store & 3 months later I got the 2 females from a different store.)Today the black stripes were near invisible on the male(I think) & the females were deep black. The 2 were locked at the mouth & their bodies were curved towards eachother and their fins were fluttering towards eachother. They did this for about 3 minuits then darted around the tank.As they did the black reappeared on the male. What was all that about???

This is pretty interesting! Maybe they are flirting?
But on a different note, change of color could be due to stress. You need to add more tiger barbs (if your tank permits). These little guys are schooling fish and do best at 6+. Some people even say that 8 is the absolute minimum. I had 4 and when I added two, it made a big difference in their behavior. They are much calmer now, look very happy and move together all the time.
I am going to add two more in near future. I've read some where that they come in red color morph too but couldn't find any yet.
Let us know if you figure out what that behavior was.

Interesting, what size tank are they in?? Even though you have male and female, they can still be nippy little suckers, do they have enough room?

tiger barbs

I have a 10 gallon tank & its only my tiger barbs and a sucker fish(I forgot its name. Its an algae eater)Ya know,I just remembered my boyfriend the night before & the morning of fed them a BUNCH of dried bloodworms.Usually they eat flake food & bloodworms are a treat a few times a week.My boyfriend says the tiger barbs were nearly jumping out of the water to chow on the bloodworms.Could this have anything to do with the funny way they were acting??

Tigers lock lips and twirl during pecking order fights. The black stripes usually turn metallic green when this happens. You should get more tigers to diffuse this violence among the group or they could harm themselves.

the pale color of the tiger barb (where the black stripes almost become invisible) usually indicates that it is afraid of something or undergoing a lot of stress.. tiger barbs do act weird sometimes, and they do a lot of skirmishes for pecking order..

mine used to literally knock heads, sometimes 3-4 of them at the same time, they just push each other with their heads until 1 remains victorious..

i think ur barbs are trying to establish a new pecking order, i don't know much about breeding but i think tiger barbs rarely mate with each other if there are other fish in the same tank.. i may be wrong though :duh:

When i had tiger barbs, they always acted weird and twirled around each other and i thought they were spawned but they were just fighting off one another.

I would guess pecking order too..

the faded stripe usually indicate stress..

the barbs color up when mating..you want to talk about weird there..and aggressive too..the male will literally push the female around the tank.. usually up against something..when she deposits the egg he fertilses then they start again..usually scattering the eggs..over the tank

the female need recoup time after that.
