One of my younger serpea tetra's (that I've had a about a year), suddenly came down with what looked to be pop-eye, the eyes were buldging out and the eye sockets looked inflamed.

Instantly I read up on pop-eye and found that the cause is water quality. So, I tested my water. Nothing was wrong! Everything was where it should be, and has been for a number of months.

ph 7.8
ammon 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 25
kh4
gh4

None of my other fish had any symptoms or ailments.

Anyway, I decided to do daily water changes anyway (25%), and did this for a week. Now the serpae has died, and it had no other visible symptoms of anything else. Anyone have any idea?

Is it just me, or are serpea tetra's very sensitive? I've had more issues with them, then with any other fish....

anyone?

i believe that pop-eye is due to a bacterial infection, which could be caused by a number of different factors. Just because the water test comes up fine, doesnt mean that the fish are going to like it. even people in climate controled enviorments get sick. Diet, stress, and other injuries or what not can contribute to sickness. don't forget, a tank is a living enironment that isn't perfect

Pop eye is in fact a bacterial infection that frequently results from poor water quality--the immune system of the fish is compromised, trying to cope with the water, and bacteria can infect fish more easily. If this was a smaller fish, it most likely received most of the harrassment from it's tankmates, increasing it's stress levels. High stress has the same result as poor water quality--lowered immune response.
