I will be planting my empty 55 gall in the next week or so. :headbang2:I plan on purchasing the nova extreme light which has an output of just under 2watts per gall. I know that there is a huge debate in this right now but what do you guys think would be my best substrate? Also, this will not be a CO2 tank. With this lighting and weekly ferts, what do you think would be my safest bets for plants? I will be moving 3 amazon swords, some water sprite and 2 short swords (not sure what kind) from my other tank. Thanks!

Substrate: Eco-Complete, Flourite, Onyx Sand, Schultz Aquatic Soil, take your pick, they'll all perform about the same.

Safest bets for plants:

Crypts
Anubias
Java ferns & moss
Marsilea (aquatic clover)
Hygrophilas (wisteria, polysperma, etc)
Rotala rotundifolia/indica
Ludwigia repens (broad leaf ludwigia)
Vallisnerias
Dwarf sagittaria
Echinodorus tenellus (pygmy chainsword)
Anacharis

Those are some of the hardier plants that you should have an easy time growing, just remember to start off with alot of plants.

I have many of the plants listed by phanmc in my tank. 2.1 watts per gallon. They are all doing great. You may want to get some root tabs for the Amazon swords.
