3 trophic levels from plants to secondary consumers? That it can become a self-sustained ecosystem?
What can I put into the tank to make a perfect mini ecosystem?

anacharis and algae, guppys, angels. I highly doubt it would be posible to create a self suistaining ecosystem with a stocking level you would like. Think 1 guppy per 75g tank, 1 angel per 180g tank. And crowded with plants.

just noticed they want 3 trophic levels, which you prolly cannot pull of in an aquarium. could prolly add an oto or 2 in w/ the snails if the tank is in direct sunlight.
ive tried a plant only tank and little bugs evenually show up and eat all the plants so you'd need something to eat the bugs.
maybe start w/ 3 MTS, 2 oto, 2 Cherry Shrimp and tons of plants in a 20gal w/ direct sunlight. If youve got a male and female of each, any breeding would eventually produce the max sustainable level w/out addition of food.
water changes would be required.

Outdoor lakes and ponds are usually replenished constantly by fresh water source whether it is a nearby stream or groundwater. The hydrological system plays an important role the ecosystem of a water body and cannot be easily emulated in an aquarium.

I realize that, thats why i stated that it couldnt be truly done in an aquarium. just topping off the tank would not even be considered self sustaining, after 2-3 months i'm doubtful there would be much water left.
