i have just started up a new aquarium which is 28 litres, and in it, i have got a male & female marigold swordtail, 2 bronze corys, a red tail shark, and a paradise fish (named bob).

my main concern for what to stock with is bob, ans e likes to nip fins, as i recently had to rescue him from my gf tank, and he was killing off her guppies by sucking out thier eyes, and nipping at their fins.

i also heard that because bob is a paradise fish, that i can't have any brightly coloured fish as this will aggravate him, i think that this my be true, as my gf had a bright red platy, which bob went for, no sooner the platy was relesed in to the tank.

if anyone has any advice, it will be greatly appriciated :)

well, yes, paradise fish can be qutie territorial and agressive towards other fish that look sort of like other male paradise fish, sort of like bettas, especially considering your tank is quite overstocked. technically, you would only have room for the paradise fish and the cories. no wonder he's getting so agressive. I reccomend giving back all of your fish, except for the cories and paraidse fish, and then your problems should be resolved. after you return the shark and swordtails, I reccomend getting two more cories to give them a proper group. also, did you cycle your tank?

28 L is a pretty small tank. a little over 7 gallons.

the paradise fish can get from 3-4"

the redtailed (black?)shark can get up top 5"

the bronze cory's stay small but cory's usually do best in schools

add two swordtails as you know paradise fish are known for being 'nippy' hit or miss with this fish.

I wouldn't add any more fish to this tank.

i'm sorry but i am ot sure what 'cycle' means, as i hae only just started out this last week. i have been quite lucky with my paradise gish and the swordtails, as they wont take nothing from the paradise fish

We posted at the same time!! Here is an article that explains what a cycle is: http://aquariumboard.com/forums/articles/26-cycling-tank-fw.html

Actually bronze corys are one of the larger cory species and can get up to 3 inches and quite chunky. So they would feel quite cramped--they are very active fish too--I have five in a 55g, and they are all over the bottom and like to be able to dart around at the mid-levels occasionally. I'd had them in a 20high and I'd thought they were cramped there.

paradise fish need at least 15 gals each, red tailed sharks need at least 45 gals, your corys would be better off in a ten gal,and the swordtails need 12-15 gals.you cant house any of the fish you have in 7-8 gals,if you upgrade to 15 then the paradise fish/swordtails could live happily, the cories that you have get too big to be happy.

when i originally stocked my tank, i went to a highly recomended aquatic centre, where i did seek advice, as to what and how many fish i can put in to my tank (which i purchased rom the aquatic centre) i was avdiced that i could have these fish all together, and he didn't stop me buying them once my tank had establishe, so tbh, i had no idea that i was ove stocking my tank.

yeah, don't worry, it happens. just never take advice form an LFS, ever, not matter how highly they are reccomended, unless we sayt hat their advice is correct. and you can keep the paradise fish in the tank you have, but I would reccomend returning everything else.

LFS's will give you alot of wrong advice just to make money.when I got my first tank(5 gals) they tried to sell me a baby pacu saying it wouldnt out grow the tank(they can get over 2ft)....but I bought a betta :p:
