I have a tropical community tank. My son really wants a big shrimp, like Jaque on Finding Nemo. We are concerned about dwarf shrimp getting eaten, and have been waiting for the store to get in some big shrimp. My LFS called me tonight and said that they got a wood shrimp today, and they are holding it for me. So who has these, and what can you tell me about them? My tank has a Marineland Bio Wheel filter, size 200. I did a little research tonight and see that these shrimp are filter feeders. So I am concerned that I don't have enough current for one. The LFS said it was a scavenger, but I think he was mistaken, or has a mis-identified shrimp or something. What I read tonight tells me that it is a bad situation if your wood shrimp are scavenging for fish food. Also, my tank is 4 1/2 months old, so I don't know if there is enough micro-organism food in the tank for one of these.
I need to pick up the shrimp asap, but I don't want to bring it home if we can't provide it with a proper home. What do you think?

I have one in a 55g community tank, mine also like to much on flake food and pellets also, I think ur tank will be good enough for it. mine is doing great so why not!

Thank you for the positive feedback. How long have you had yours? How strong is the current in your tank? What behavior does your shrimp have?

I have only had him for a very short time, not a ton of current in my tank but loves to stand right under the filter then move to the back of the tank near the fake plants and the direction the flakes tend to lay. it really is a cool shrimp witht he best hands, they have little fans on their hands and to watch them is extremly interesting!

Hi, Wood shrimp/ Bamboo shrimp make excellent tank mates. They are big enough that others won't bother them. They are filter feeders, which means they do not have claws, but instead have fan like appendages. They love to sit in moving water and let their food land in their mitts. They then insert it into their mouths. They do like to have friends(other wood shrimp) and like to hide on wood. They are sometimes chameleon like with the wood in the tank. Last, but not least, they are very sensitive to copper levels in the tank. Fairly neutral ph is needed.
So, they are easy to take care of and entertaining to watch. I have had many over the last couple of years. The ones I have now have been with me for at least 6 months and 2-4 moltings.
