What did I just rescue from walmart?

Wow Sammie, thanks for all the info. I know everything I need to know about this little guy :) I cant wait to set up a small brackish tank now. A 10 gallon will do fine I think.

you read the article and know about specific gravity and all that? some of that info in that posted article was false to my knowledge.

Well I can basically look that up - easy enough to research brackish setups now that I'm sure it a brackish fish. Right now its in gallons of water with about 2 tea spoons of aquarium salt.

he is such a cute little goby!whta other fish did wal-mart have him with?

He was in a tank with some golden algae eaters. I hope when I go home, he'll be looking better. I was going to try and make it to Big Al's today but will have to wait till tomorrow for the small tank.

aquarium salt does not make brackish water. you need a special SW mix for making marine tanks to do that. there's much more to SW than just salt, you know.

I understand what you're saying but thats all I had last night (just kinda saying what the fish is in at the moment). I need to do some research and find what I need to get for the brackish setup. For the meantime, it will be in the water with just aquarium salt. Better than nothing I think. The PH is probably lower than it needs to be and I'm sure hardness is lower as well right now.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I've set up my Goby tank. The tank is smaller than I'd like due to the location (kitchen counter of all places.

Its a 5.5 gallon with a small red sea nano filter ( http://www.petco.com/Assets/product_images/3\3077388330B.jpg )

I was clever though ... I think I did something that increased the filters efficiency and capacity. I took a fairly coarse spong like what you'd find in a small aquaclear. I took a blade and punched a hole down the center. I slipped this on the inlet tube so it can do the particle filtering and mechanical work. I then took a small media bag and cut it in half... tied one end and filled the filter with as much bio media particles as I could in this bag. So basically the mechanical filteration happens outside the filter and the bio is inside the filter. I think this should be enough for the one fish

For now its running with 1 table spoon of sea salt (level ... not heaping) for the 5.5 gallons of water. Also I put a large empty apple snail shell in there as well as a piece of sort of white rock with fish fossils and stuff - girl at the pet store said they use it in their african cichild tanks and marine tanks to raise the PH a bit.

I have no heater in the tank but the room temperature is about 70 - 72F so I hope that is enough for the little guy.

well... I guess that'd work... good luck, and try to get a bigger tank as soon as you're able.
