I have been given a Humu Triggerfish and i have to go pick it up today!!!!!!! I was wondering what I shoudl feed it? I know they are carinovores. I can feed it little fish I have been told? Would this jsut be the freshwater ones you buy from the pet store or shoudl I get them from somewhere else? Any ideas and information will be helpfull. He is goinging into a 75 gallon and he will be by himslef if that matters at all.

You shouldn't ever feed a fish "feeder" fish from the big box stores... the feeder fish that they all have are way overcrowded with sketchy filtration at best. They are often parasite infested and, in general, sickly fish. If you like your fish and want it to be healthy I would avoid it like the plague (literally). If he needs meaty stuff try some fo the frozen fish foods. I just wouldn't use those nasty feeder fish (plus, they have very little to no nutritional value). Good luck with the new fish.

Best bet for "live feeders" imo is to get a small tank like a 10G and put a few Mollies in there and let them breed and then feed the fry to the trigger.

I did feed my eel and puffers goldfish for 7 years straight.. goldfish bought at Wal-Mart because they were 3cents at the time (early 90's). This was what my LFS told me to do and I didn't know better.. now knowing about all the nasty stuff that comes with goldfish I am shocked my fish even survived, nevermind the fact they never even got sick and always seemed fat and happy. Goes against everything I have read... but still, I would never recommend feeder goldfish to SW fish knowing what I do now.

I used to feed goldfish to my tiger oscar back in college. Thought that was what you were supposed to do... he was a great fish and huge. No health problems... heck, he may still be alive (gave him to a friend about 15 years ago, lol.) Now that I am a bit more organized and have more time to study things for leisure, I am amazed at what i was actually doing to that fish. I always read the label on my dog,cat and kid's foods to make sure they are getting good stuff. Why wouldn't I be willing to do the same for my fish. Right now we have, literally, about $45 worth of frozen food (different varieties of shrimp worms, pods, etc...I am sure I am not unusual in that regard). My fish seem to thrive on it and I know that I am not feeding them diseased food.

They don't normally eat fish in the wild. Maybe the very occasional small fish, but they are invertebrate feeders and algal grazers. Try to include as many varied invertebrate meats as possible. Some foods even have sea urchin, etc.

Official sources show that benthic crustaceans make up to a third of their wild diet (Gammarids), with smaller amounts of sponges/tunicates, algae, crabs, snails, pelecypods, worms, bryozoans, echinoderms, etc. As you can see, the diets are extremely cosmopolitan.

Is that the case for most triggers or specifically the humuhumunukunukuapau'a? Just curious.. not that I ever want a trigger.. seen too many people bitten by them, but they are nice looking fish.

If he is finicky eater and will only eat live foods then i agree with feeding mollies or ghost shrimp...try and wean him off of live foods, IMO only makes them more aggresive. Try fresh sea food like salmon, calamari, clams etc

I got him in the tank today doing great. He ate some forzen brine shrimp that i had. Going to go to the pet store to get some more variety of forzens. Thanks for all the opnions and advice

I was told that they will pick and eat my snails, crabs, and starfish. Is this true. I havent put many in yet, wanting to hear what some of you think.

Very True, its hit and miss. Triggers can get very board and decide just to play with them, kind of fun to watch...but not so good for the snail or crab.
