The tank at home has a background that looks like rocks and plants. I don't like the ones with fish on them, as I think that fish that don't move look silly. The background looks pretty nice, and I've taken pictures, and it actually can look pretty real. But it gives the appearance of a finite depth to the tank.
I'm pulling together the pieces for an office tank. I'm really leaning toward trying a black or dark blue background to see if it gives the effect of endless depth. That's supposed to be the advantage of a dark, solid color, background.

Solid, black all the way. Black backgrounds give a better contrast to the interior of the tank and can heighten colors -- especially the fishes'.

aluminum foil can be a neat backround, but black is my favorite.
pictures seem kinda tacky to me, but i suppose there are exceptions.
i use no backing on my mbuna tank, but theres a nice tough algae coat on it.

really like the quartz streak on that center (not) piece. rarely do rocks have such presence.

I like the solid black background and backgrounds that have a lot of plants on them. I think the backgrounds with the fish on them draw attention away from the real beauty of the tank and the fish inside.
