Hey everybody! I have been wondering about what people call "beginner fish". You know, those cheap tough fish that are given to kids to put in bowls without cycling and so on. In your opinion, what is the hardiest fish around? It doesn't have to be one commonly found in pet stores, just one that can take more that most fish.

id say gouramis ive heard horror stories of whole tanks dying and the only fish left was a gourami. there was even a story of a giant gourami that was feed candy bars and he got huge and was finally donated to an aquarium. my friend recently had a huge ick atack, killed all the fish in the tank but the gourami came through fine.

Gold fish.

I am personally going to say mosquito fish. Mine have been living outside in a 45g plastic tote. The water is now brown with rotted leaves and they have experienced temps from 20F (the tote froze over) and 105F.

All the commonly sold fish are fairly tough, depends on what the problem is. Gouramis do not do well in my tanks for whatever reason. Platies and barbs are durable, as are goldfish.
