I was thinking to take various moss balls and run weighted chop sticks through them to make tree like structures in the tank. What do you think? Also are mossballs different from other mosses or are they grown that way?

Are you talking about the "moss balls" they sell at chain stores?

yeah i never really check them out but i saw some today and thought if you could stack them they might look nice.

Do they look like these:

If so, I think it's possible that you do columns with them.

You mean those floating ones attached to fishing line? Those are Styrofoam balls with java moss wrapped about them. Java moss looks hairy, while Marimo moss balls are forest green and look more..fuzzy or fluffy.
You could certainly wrap java moss into a column design. It's pretty pliable. You just need some fishing line to keep it in place. Marimo moss balls are less likely to stay in place, and more likely to clump up and fall apart if you flatten them or try to use them for scaping anything other than a rug or a ball.

Do you think they would hold in gases and stink up a tank. Are they made for fish tanks or do they grow like that in the wild.
