I've been reading a lot on this forum lately, and I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out what fish will work well with a Paradise Fish. Fancy Guppies, Dianos, Tetras?? I think I will want to put some shrimp in there too to help keep the algea down.

I have a 10 gallon vertical tank. I have 3 plastic plants, and a stone scuplture in the middle. I think I'm going to add a piece of driftwood for better seperation.

I'm still cycling, but would like to get things settled by the time the cycling is complete. I'm also thinking of getting some java ferns. Any thoughts??

I've heard they may munch on shrimp, but since ghost shrimp are usually around a quarter, it's not too much of a loss. Snails may be a better option for algae control- I haven't put cats in with my paradise fish, but may try it once I get my new tank up and running.

I think tetras/danios and peaceful fish without long fins would be OK- my paradise fish only chase each other, and leave other fish alone... They usually just stay in their little turf and only come out to play in the powerhead or occasionally harass each other. If someone else has more experience with paradise fish, they could probably tell you more about which species they can coexist with.

Here's what I am thinking after reading through the forums some more:

Paradise Fish (1)
Fancy Guppies (3-4)
Cherry Fire Shrimp (2)

If I can rig a more powerful light fixture to my canopy so I can put some real plants in there.

What do you think?

I think this setup would be fine. The Paradise fish I had were only semi-aggressive towards each other, and weren't aggressive at all to any other tankmates (tetras, gouramis, and a pleco).

Good luck!

I would recommend getting all male fancy guppies so you don't have to worry about babies and you'll get more color that way too. Could have all 4 males be different colors if you wanted.

I also do think that the guppies are a better choice than the danios for sure and even the tetras. Glad to see you doing your research and thinking things through so well. Can't wait to see pics when you get it all setup :)

What kind of paradise? I had a black paradise, and he was ruthless in eleminating all other mid to upper level swimmers--happened so fast I didn't have time to remove the other fish to save them. He got along fine with the cories, chocolate pleco, whiptails, otos and meyersi pleco, but nothing else was left alone. The red and blue paradise are a different species and not as aggressive.

I would def go for a red or blue paradise. I'm looking for bright color so I was planning on getting a red or blue anyways.

Thanks for all your advice.

I love my blue paradise- can't say that enough. Especially if this is your first tank, blue paradise are very hardy, and about the only potential problem is tankmates... I'd avoid things with long fins, just in case you get a nasty fish... I think tetras would probably be better, just because they don't resemble gouramis in any way, don't have the long guppy fins to nip, and schooling is just fun to watch.
