Hi! I am starting to set up a 35gal aquarium...BUT I dont know what type of fish to get... I want something that is relatively hardy (I am quite new to this--I have kept pirahnas, barbs, and gouramis in the past with success), colorful (I like the looks of: blue rams, tiger barbs, discus...), and will be able to remain in this size of tank... I would like to have something that can be kept in pairs or a small school of 4-5 fish (something that will grow to fill the tank, maybe 4-5 inches when mature?)... So...What can everyone come up with???
Also, the tank currently has a sub. of polished riverstones, and I am going to use silk plants (less for me to worry about).

You have plenty of room for a nice size school (12-14) of small to medium size tetras maybe penguin tetras, red serpeas, cardinal tetras, pristella tetras or brilliant rasboras. I'd go with one larger school rather than two but it's up to you ultimately. If you go with 2 you could easily go with aound 7 of each. A group of about 5 cories and a pair of apistos or GBRs or Bolivian rams would fit nicely in there.

What Reddog suggests sounds good, I would add something for the top portion of the tank, like an Angel fish, depending on the amount and the kind of tetras.

No clown loaches! They grow up to a foot, waaaay too big for a 35!

Although sand would be ideal for the bottom dwellers. I think if the rocks are smooth and polished it wouldn't be too bad on the cories. Stay away from any type of sharp rock or gravel. Water parameters also play a part in barbel loss and mouth issues for the cories, so keep your water nice and clean by doing 35-50 % changes weekly.
