This is a swordtail tetra (i think) in a 16g with 5 others, a betta, and 3 young apple snails. Tank parameters: temp 78, amm 0, trite 0, trate 15. Fed once daily with fasting on saturdays. I noticed today that this one fish has angry red lumps. It looks like they are under the skin, in the intestines, and at the base of the tail. What could this be? No other inhabitants are effected and the fish is eating and acting normally. Any guesses on what it is and how I should treat? Tank is lightly planted with java moss and java fern. Water change of 30% every 4 days. Tetras were qt'ed for about 4 weeks, then betta and apple snails were added. ????

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here since I'm new too. Have you done any research for Neon Tetra Disease?

arrggh. I hope its not that....this fish is not sluggish, or leaving the group, and is eating well. I am tempted to isolate it but don't know if that is pointless or not.

It's bacterial. Internal, I believe gram negative. You can try Jungle Medicated Anti-Bacterial food, but in my experience once it gets to the point of showing external signs it is too late. This is highly contagious. It would be best that you euthanize the fish.

euthanize that fish and then treat the tanks with anti-bacterial food? Are there any meds to treat a planted tank with inverts? Since qt time was over, I have been using my python on both of my established tanks. Which would mean both have been subjected to this bacteria. Will feeding with the anti-bacterial food be enough to prevent the other fish from being effected? I have cherry shrimp and apple snails in both of the tanks which could be effected. Thanks nolapete.

Can you set up the QT temporarily for the inverts?

I know I can definately wrangle the snails, the shrimp not so easy as they hide in the depths of the java moss afro. Would the best course be food or water column meds to knock this out?

I might mention that I have a uv sterilizer I could set up on one tank. Would this be of any benefit? I am curious if it would be better to treat the water column of both tanks as all fish are asympomatic at this point or too feed or do both? Any insight? Plants can be replaced, I don't want to lose my stock. Inverts can be moved to a qt as long as I am not using meds that will have longevity in my tanks. Help, please. I might add, the infected fish has been euthanized.
