Thought this would be a neat thread to have around, see everyones story of how they got into the hobby.

I had a goldfish when I young, do not remember much of it, sadly it may have been a fair fish, but I am not positive. THen about 5 years ago a friend called and asked if I wanted to give him a hand cus he was buying a fish tank... I met him at the fish store and by the time I left I too walked out with a 20G starter kit and have been fairly hooked every since.

My Stubborn mother. lol

She bought one of those 10G kits and some goldfish. After a while fish started dying, she didn't know why (but it was b/c she was using tap water w/ no conditioner). To make a long story short, one summer I started taking care of the fish and upgraded to 55G, that when the fever caught on...

It started out with my father when I was young with 1 - 10 gallon tank which progressed to 5 - 10 gallon tanks... You know the old ones with the metal wrapped edges with the tar substance underneath.. The submersible aerators with the charcoal bits and cotton on top.. and under-gravel filters..
When my parents got divorced he took the tanks with him and it wasn't until later in my life that I got back into fish simply due to being able to afford them. I still did FW and had 2 - 55 gallons. 1 with 2 Oscars (which I know is not big enough but at the time my fish store told me it would be fine.. This was pre-internet years).. A second tank with cichlid.. I kept those tanks for many years until I moved to Oklahoma for about 5 years. When down there I really worked to many hours to correctly take care of fish so I didn't have any tanks. I eventually moved back home and tried my hand at a small SW tank that failed miserably and just recently purchased my 75 gallon from a friend. I have been reading off and on for the last several years and finally feel somewhat hopeful that I won't crash a whole tank again.

I've been fascinated with fish tanks for as long as I can remember. I remember my uncle having one when I was very young, and every time the family would go to a restaurant with a fish tank, I just had to go look at the fish. I got my own 1st tank for a birthday present when I hit puberty. (12-13 yrs) and have had fish ever since. I didn't even ask for one...my mom went out and surprised me with one (10g). I guess she always knew I like fish tanks. I can thank her for getting me into this great hobby.

i've alwas loved fish, when i was eight i got my first tank it was the 30 that i have now it lasted about 3 years then flopped. Then about last august i got re bit with the bug and went searching for some tanks.

i grew up around fish tanks, my father has had at least 3 fish tanks for the last 18 years(hasn't had one in 2 years)

When I was 8 or 9 I had goldfish, probably 5, in a 10 gal. tank. All died when I went on vacation. I have no idea how often it was cleaned.

Fast forward 7 years later. I had stumbled accross pics of different FW fish and was stunned at how colorful and lively they were. Asked for a tank but got an Ipod instead...lol

Last fall, I finally begged my parents to let me get a tank for my b'day. Wooohooo!!! We went and got a 30 gal. A couple months later, through the miracles of google, I also found AC!

Now my 30 gal. is up and running smoothly and my 55 is in the process.
